Why do most press releases flop? Often, we send out information about a new product or event thinking that is all that is needed to get it in the news, only to find it was never mentioned at all. There are many reasons for this – from no newsworthy angle, not providing enough information to providing too much information, overselling it in an off-putting way, sending it to the wrong person or platform, or even just competing with the more important news of the day.
Press releases still remain as one of the most effective ways to reach your organisation’s various stakeholders. A well-crafted press release will help communicate your intended messages, but it should first grab the attention of the media, to be picked up and reported by them. Only then will your intended message reach your target audience.

About the Trainer
Bhavani is a communications veteran with over 35 years of experience. She is currently the Managing Director of International PR Training Pte Ltd and an Associate Director, Crisis Communications, Kenyon International Emergency Services. She is also an associate trainer with Singapore Business Federation, Civil Service College, SMU Academy and the Marketing Institute of Singapore. She lectures part-time in crisis communications at the National University of Singapore. She was recently inducted into Singapore Media Industry Hall of
Fame by Singapore Press Club.
Bhavani has served in various positions in the public sector. She was the Director of Public Communications, Director of Corporate Communications and the Press Secretary to the Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, and Director of Emergency Preparedness. She also served as Head of Public Affairs with the Ministry of Trade and Industry and Head Media Relations Branch in the Ministry of Defence.
She was President of the Institute of Public Relations, Singapore for seven years, and now serves as Advisor to the IPRS Accreditation Board. Bhavani holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the National University of Singapore, a Master of Arts in Mass Communications from the Oklahoma City University, USA and a Graduate Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK.

Guest trainer Kevin Lim, will do a presentation from a media perspective and evaluate some of your press releases. He is a veteran reporter and editor with over 30 years’ experience. He has worked in top news organisations including Reuters, Bloomberg, Dow Jones/Wall Street Journal, Nikkei and Channel News Asia. He still writes occasionally for different news services. Kevin is now a consultant to companies in the financial, alternative energy and start-up space.
